IT’S A WRAP – Western Canadian Championships a Big Success!

February 11, 2019 Posted by Mike Edwards

The 2019 Kelowna Toyota Western Canadian Championships and Teck Okanagan Cup  were a big success!

The snow conditions were incredible, the racing was competitive and  racers, coaches and volunteers alike  had big but tired smiles by the end of the weekend.

Thanks to all the volunteers.  Without dedicated volunteers this event could not have happened.

Special thanks to the grooming crew –  especially staff groomer Colin Thomson –  for all the late nights and early mornings and for  consistently great trails and grooming.

Thanks to all the racers, coaches and support people for coming to Telemark to contribute to an exciting,  competitive and fun event.

Thanks to all the Telemark Nordic Club members and public skiers for your patience as the event took over the Telemark Nordic Centre for the weekend. Back to normal now.

The Telemark Nordic Club sent a strong contingent of over 50 athletes to compete in the Western Championships and Okanagan Cup. Our Telemark Team athletes had several amazing performances over the weekend including many individual and team relay medals.  Team Telemark contributed greatly to  British Columbia dominating the event and winning the overall Aggregate title over the other Western provinces.  Click here for full Results.

Telemark Open for Recreational Skiing During the Western Canadian Championships!

February 7, 2019 Posted by Mike Edwards

The Telemark Nordic Club is proud to host over  500 athletes and coaches at the Western Canadian Championships this weekend Feb 8th to 10th (Friday to Sunday)

The ski and snowshoe trails will remain open to members and the public during the races but please be aware that there will be some trails restrictions and parking will be limited.

To avoid the crowds, get a parking spot and have the best skiing available it would be best to plan your ski for after 5pm on Friday –  after 3pm on Saturday and after 2pm on Sunday.

If you want to come for a ski or snowshoe earlier and watch some of the racing here are some details…

Friday – Sprint Races 9am to 5pm –  Most ski trails will be open because the races only use a small section of trail.  The stadium area Race 1 and Parts of Squirrel will be closed.  Access to the recreation trails will be through the Biathlon range area. MAP

Saturday – Mass Start Distance races 9am to 3pm – Access only to Panorama, Telemark, Summer Road, Forest Lane and Memory Lane .  All other trials are closed or blocked off while the races are on. MAP

Sunday – Relay races 9am to 1pm – Same access as on Saturday. MAP

Snowshoe trails: Because the snowshoe trails cross the ski race trails in several spots which could be dangerous for racers the Chalet loop is the only snow shoe trail which be open until Sunday after 2pm when all trails will be open.

Telemark Athletes at World JR/U23 Championships

January 23, 2019 Posted by Mike Edwards

Telemark’s own Gareth Williams and Hannah Mehain are currently competing at The World Junior/U23 Championships Jan 19-27, 2019 in Lahti Finland.  To represent Telemark and Canada at the World Championships is a big deal and big feather in the cap of the Telemark Nordic Club programs, coaches and athletes.  We are all extremely proud of Gareth and the Hannah and their accomplishments.  Hannah and Gareth are 2 of only 3 athletes from BC to represent Canada at the Championships.  Gareth is a long time Kelowna resident and grew up skiing at Telemark.  Hannah lives in Vernon but works with Telemark Head Coach Adam Elliot and represents Telemark when racing.  The World Junior/U23 Championships is an annual major competition in all the ‘Nordic’ Sports (Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined) for the best Juniors age (16-19) and U23 athletes (age 20-22) in the world. These are the next World Cup stars.

Telemark Updates

January 20, 2019 Posted by Mike Edwards

What a great weekend up here at Telemark. It was a busy day on Saturday and everyone was smiling including the “Snowmen”. With 10 cm of snow over the last couple of days conditions are at their best yet.

We are getting excited for the Western Canadian Championships coming up in less than 3 weeks – Feb 8-10. 500 Athletes from Across North America will be competing at Telemark. Volunteers still needed – Contact

Do your skis seem a little slow sometimes? Maybe its not just you. A good glide waxing can help make sure your skis are working their best and you get the most enjoyment out of your skiing. Leave your skis with us. We will glide wax them for you and you can pick them up when you come to ski next. $15 for a classic ski wax and $20 for a Skate ski wax.

Telemark is Open for Recreational Skiing and Snowshoeing on Loppet Day

January 12, 2019 Posted by Mike Edwards

The Apple Loppet is set for Sunday Jan 13th!  Don’t let that stop you from coming up for a recreational ski or snowshoe  The Telemark Nordic Centre is open for public skiing and snowshoeing on Loppet day.  To avoid the crowds and have the best skiing available it would be best to plan your ski for mid-day.

The kids races start at 9:30am and the main Loppet starts at 10:10am.  The Classic leg of the Loppet – on Telemark Trail –  is first to go and most racers will be off that trail by 11:15am.  The skate leg of the Loppet – mainly on Fern Trail – is last so it will be better to ski in the afternoon.  Most of the competitors will be finished  and things will be winding down by about 12:30 with the Loppet course completely cleared by 1:30. Full Schedule

Snowshoers will need to be extra careful crossing the ski trails when racers are coming through.

Saturday was a beautiful and busy day up here.  We were in the sunshine above the valley cloud with temperatures hovering just around zero Celsius.  Should be more of the same on Sunday and will make for another great day at Telemark for the Loppet and for regular skiing and snowshoeing.
